Jan & Dean Album Reviews - Page Three

Yet more great Jan & Dean album reviews for you to read. Feel free to send in your review!

Popsicle (1966)

Songs: Popsicle, Norwegian Wood, The Restless Surfer, Shes My Summer Girl, Down At Malibu Beach, Summer Means Fun, Tennessee, A Surfers Dream, Surf Route 101, Surfin Wild, Waiamia Bay, One Piece Topless bathing Suit

Jan had just had his accident, Jan & Dean were about to renew their Liberty contract, and due to no new material being released Liberty thought it wise to release this effort.

The cover is dreadful, the song listing is actually not too bad, with some great tracks, however there are much better compilations out there.

One to avoid, as it really does not do Jan & Dean any justice what so ever!

Golden Hits Volume 3 (1967)
Songs: Eve Of Destruction, Detroit City, Louie Louie, Memphis, Batman, Yesterday, Everybody Loves A Clown, 1-2-3, Do Wah Diddy, Little Deuce Coupe, Hang On Sloopy, Walk Right In

Golden Hits Volume III. A collection of Jan & Deans, erm, no so much hits! This compilation is probably as bad, if not worse than the previous Jan & Dean release. Not for the fact that the songs are not good, but for the fact that it should not have ever been released in the first place!

Nothing much can really be said about this album, except look out for far better compilations!

Save For A Rainy Day (1967)

Songs: Yellow Balloon, Here Comes The Rain, Pocket Full Of Rainbows, When Sunny Gets Blue, Rhythm Of The Rain, Like A Summer Rain, Raindrops, Rain On The Roof, Crying In The Rain, Lullaby In The Rain, Save For A Rainy Day Theme

Now this is more like it! Probably the greatest post-accident album released under the Jan & Dean name. This album is basically a Dean Torrence solo effort, but it has all the hallmarks of the hit-era Jan & Dean.

All the songs are great on this album, and up until recently this album was only available on bootleg, as Liberty once again in their wisdom did not release it. Neither did J&Ds new company Columbia sadly, but they should have!

The mono version of this album available from Sundazed is truly amazing, the unreleased stereo version from Columbia (available by emailing us here) is out of this world!

Not a bad song on this one, and must buy for fans or non-fans.

One Summer Night / Live (1982)

Silver Summer (1985)

Port To Paradise

Songs: Hot Lookin Lady, How-How I Love Her, Totally Wild, Hawaiian Mirage, The Best Love Ever, Ocean Park Angel, Just One Of Those Days, The National Inquirer, She Sing Sang A Song, Tinsel Town, Rock City, Ocean Park Angel (Alt version), Message from Jan, Hot Lookin Lady (Alt)

Now this is a great album. Jan & Deans Port To Paradise has some very good recordings on it, including the amazingly heart-warming Ocean Park Angel.

Other great tracks on the album are Totally Wild, She Sing Sang A Song and Tinsel Town. There’s a lot of Jan on this album, and not too much Dean, but it's still a great album to own.
